The Dojo Kun (Precepts/Creed) serves as a constant reminder that we as students of Karate have a higher responsibility to maintain the noble traditions set by our karate founders and forefathers centuries ago. It is the duty and responsibility of every student to learn and live the Dojo Kun.
1. SEEK PERFECTION OF CHARACTER
Character can be good or bad; always seek to perfect yours. Perfect character means always doing the right thing regardless of the consequences. This includes maintaining integrity, honesty, compassion, and honor. True character is revealed during the most stressful situations.
2. BE LOYAL TO YOUR SENSEI AND YOUR DOJO.
Loyalty and faithfulness are the most desirable character traits of karate students; a student must show their loyalty in order prove themselves trustworthy. This loyalty shows the deepest respect for everything that the teacher has shared with the student.
3. ALWAYS GIVE 100% EFFORT .
There are no rewards for mediocrity; every student must work hard in order to see results. Giving less than 100% is essentially placing limitations on success. Set goals, reach goals, then exceed goals by always giving 100% effort every single day.
4. RESPECT OTHERS AND YOURSELF.
Karate begins and ends with respect. This is the core of traditional martial arts; To practice self-control, the student must learn to respect others and themselves.
5. REFRAIN FROM VIOLENCE.
This may seem like a paradox because the very essence of Okinawan Karate’s Self-Protection methodology is fast and violent. While we do learn techniques and methods that give the practicioner the ability to cause physical harm, our perfect character, as well self-control and respect will give us the capacity to judge when to use violence to protect ourselves, or when to use more peaceful methods to diffuse volatile encounters.
